So, you want to get married in Colchester? If you read our last blog ‘6 Colchester wedding venues you will love - part 1’ then you will be familiar with some of our highly regarded wedding hotspots – this week we focus on to 3 more, which if you live in Essex, are conveniently all on your doorstep…
If you’re a history buff then there is no better place to wed your soulmate than at Colchester Castle. Ordered by William the Conqueror in 1076, the castle is built upon the foundations of a far earlier Roman temple of Claudius dating back to 54-50 AD. Fast forward to 1922 where the castle was acquired by the council and made into the public museum it is today. It’s also handy that it is a licensed venue where you can be legally married. The Chapel is the most beautiful space to share your vows and the Charles Grey Room will seat up to 80 of your guests.
For summer weddings you can choose to say ‘I do’ in the castle Summer House, which is set in a secluded spot just behind the castle. The romantic walkway lined with trees makes for fabulous video footage and photos.
Always dreamt of marrying in a Tudor palace? Want to drink champagne and nibble wedding canapes where Henry VIII once walked? Then your dreams can become a reality at the breath taking Layer Marney Tower. The historical landmark has been updated with weddings and corporate events in mind so couples and guests can enjoy the beautiful surroundings including picturesque gardens and far reaching views of the Blackwater Estuary.
For a larger party of up to 120 guests, the Corsellis Room would be recommended for your wedding ceremony. For a smaller wedding, Tuke’s Chamber can hold 40 guests, or in the hall at the base of the Tower, which can accommodate up to 18 guests. For your reception we recommend The Long Gallery – it’s a stunning room, with a magnificent beamed ceiling, oak panelling and a polished oak sprung floor – ideal for dancing. They can comfortably accommodate between 14 and 140 guests for a sit down meal and room for a further 60 guests in the evening.
For couples with a more rustic taste, The Barn in Great Tey, Colchester is the place for you. The Barn is an immaculately preserved 16th Century Grade II listed timber building and is one of the largest thatched barns in England. With original beams, a lofty gallery and pretty garden area for drinks, there’s not much to not like about The Barn. With every booking, they appoint you your own wedding coordinator, helping you plan your day with ease.
For ceremonies up to 60 seated guests, the Galleria is an elegant upstairs area within the eaves, with views overlooking the high beams of The Barn providing a gorgeous backdrop to your wedding day. The elevated Galleria area offers the perfect grand entrance setting for the arrival of the Bridal party. Enjoy a 4 course meal or quaint afternoon tea wedding breakfast before speeches and dancing.
